CD Review: All Music Guide Settin' The Pace
George Gee's big band benefited from the retro-swing movement of the
1990s, playing for dancers in New York and carving out a niche for themselves.
For this particular project, they primarily perform arrangements by Frank
Foster, who was present to lead them through their first studio (as opposed
to live) recording. The music swings hard, many soloists are heard from,
and the ensemble displays plenty of spirit. The music is actually quite
boppish much of the time and, although not flawless, its looseness is
infectious. Carla Cook's vocals on "Lover Come Back to Me,"
"The Very Thought of You," and "Autumn Leaves" are
an extra plus.
